I am intrigued by so many of the artists who studied at Black Mountain College right here in North Carolina. Last week, Henry cut out this obituary for Ruth Awasa, because he knew I would love the shapes of her beautiful woven baskets. He was right! And imagine my surprise to see that she was a student at Black Mountain College.

Fortunately there are quite a few videos to learn more about Awasa’s work.

I also enjoyed this interview with Paul Lanier, Awasa’s son on NPR last week.

What an incredible attitude and extraordinary vision. Hooray for the Internet so that Awasa’s legacy can continue to inspire others like me.

I didn’t know she died. How sad. She did beautiful things. And, many of those wire “baskets” were actually knit. I learned her technique for making them, no knitting needles required.

Wow, Sara! That is amazing. I would love to learn how to knit this. Maybe a good excuse to reunite.

Her baskets are incredible. I am awe struck.
