Operation Harvey: Hopscotch
Back before we had Lucy, we watched a lot of reality TV. We watched quite a few seasons of VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club. I can’t tell you if CFC is still on TV, because we don’t watch that much TV after we put her to bed. If we do watch anything, we turn on a specific show, movie or sports event. Not a lot of channel flipping.
This morning I woke up thinking I am going to turn into Harvey, the drill sargent, from Celebrity Fit Club. Lucy is not getting enough exercise. Period. Especially this week since it was 101 degrees outside. That is too hot for Mama. Plus she had a little cold mid-week, which interrupted her sleep. I.e. We never got her to sleep, so she slept with us for two nights. I was internally freaking out that somehow we had made it this far and all of a sudden back-tracked to the point where she was going to sleep with us. Fortunately, we got her to bed last night, but not without a lot of effort.
After a morning of attempted exercise at the National Building Museum, I slipped away to the studio during Lucy’s nap. I have not been feeling very creative lately because I have been consumed with creating exercise opportunities for the last three or four months (the playground). So I have been organizing my materials whenever I’m at the studio. Then I had an idea. I could use my washi tape to create a hopscotch area. Lucy doesn’t know how to play hopscotch nor even how to get two feet off the ground at the same time. But I’m guessing that she may exhaust herself trying.
At first I was going to use these giant post-its for the squares. Then I realized they would never last. So I just used a couple as a guide instead. I made it all the way with the turquoise tape until the very final row. So I used the striped tape for the top line. Perhaps the finish line? This tape matched the best.
I considered using painter’s tape, which would work on pretty much any hard surface. Or chalk. Obviously. It really didn’t take me that long to tape it off. I like the bright colors of the numbers.
I didn’t clear this with Stuart first. I hope it’s okay. And maybe it will inspire him to hopscotch a few rounds with Jenn. I have no idea if Operation Harvey will work. I’m gathering all other ideas and suggestions for indoor exercise. So please share. I wish that Lucy slept as well as she does at Grams after going up and down her stairs. I don’t really have room for a set of stairs, but maybe we could do that while visiting the studio.
