Meet The Walls

Raleigh and Polly Wall - my great-great grandparents

In non-fort related news, a picture of my great-great grandparents surfaced on Facebook. How amazing is that!

Raleigh and Polly Wall are my paternal grandfather’s grandparents. My grandfather was Raleigh Braudus Rutledge. He died when I was 13. Although we grew up in his house, we weren’t that close. I never sat down and talked to him.

About five years ago, I had a dream that I sat down next to my grandpa and talked to him. He was to my right. And it was great, but I don’t remember anything that we said other than we were talking.

Later that week, I went to the beach for a retreat. We had a time when we split off into pairs and I sat down next to someone from Winston-Salem. And guess what… she is my cousin through my grandfather’s side. Raleigh and Polly are our common ancestors. Thank you to Rebecca Wall for posting this picture. We just reconnected on Facebook this week. Literally the day after I thought about Rebecca for the first time in a few years.

See, Henry, Facebook is good for something.

According to my dad, Grandma Polly was quite a character. I don’t know what that means, but I would love to know. I don’t see any resemblance. Do you? I spent much of my pregnancy wondering what parts of me I received from my grandparents, great-grandparents, and on back. That’s one of the questions I should have asked Grandma before she died. I am going to try to include that as one of the subjects I write in Lucy’s journal so that she will have some idea about herself.
